General Paper
Critical Thinking. Global Perspectives. Persuasive Communication.
Our General Paper programme follows closely with the latest MOE 2023 General Paper Syllabus (Pre-University H1), developing students’ ability to analyse real-world issues, reason critically and communicate persuasively in English.
All content is aligned with the requirements set out in the 2023 General Paper Syllabus (Pre-University H1) published by the Ministry of Education Singapore.
Why General Paper Matters
General Paper is a compulsory H1 subject for all A-Level students. It is the only subject that requires students to engage with real-world issues across all disciplines — making it both intellectually demanding and deeply rewarding. A strong GP grade opens doors to competitive university courses and demonstrates the critical thinking and communication skills that employers and universities value most.
Students engage with issues of local, regional and global significance — from climate change to AI, geopolitics to social inequality — developing a nuanced understanding of the world.
GP trains students to analyse arguments, evaluate evidence, identify assumptions and construct well-reasoned responses — skills that transfer to every university subject and career.
Students learn to write persuasively, precisely and fluently in English — a skill that underpins success in university, the workplace and public life.
Three Content Areas
The GP syllabus integrates three content areas — taught in an iterative and interconnected manner — to develop students who are knowledgeable, critical and articulate.
Students examine timely and timeless issues across six knowledge domains — society, economics, politics, arts, science and the environment — developing conceptual understanding that transfers across topics.
GP develops sound reasoning through active analysis and evaluation of information and ideas. Students learn to generate informed, insightful personal responses through analysis, evaluation and creation.
Students understand how English is used to shape meaning and apply this understanding to access texts and communicate effectively — developing persuasive, accurate and well-organised writing.
Six Domains of Knowledge
GP essay questions draw from six broad knowledge domains. Students need both breadth — familiarity with all six — and depth — the ability to deploy specific, well-chosen examples under examination conditions.
Social issues, demographics, identity, community, religion and cultural change
Globalisation, trade, inequality, development, technology and economic policy
Governance, democracy, geopolitics, international relations and diplomacy
Literature, media, language, history, philosophy and cultural expression
Innovation, AI, bioethics, digital transformation and scientific progress
Climate change, sustainability, biodiversity, resource management and green policy

How We Coach at Each Stage
Our GP coaching is tailored to where your child is in their JC journey — building the foundation in JC1 and refining examination technique in JC2.
JC1 is the knowledge-building and skills-formation year. Students are introduced to the six knowledge domains, develop their reading comprehension technique, and begin constructing structured, well-reasoned essays. The focus is on breadth of knowledge and accuracy of language.
JC1 students sit school-based Common Tests and mid-year / end-of-year examinations. These typically mirror the A-Level format — Paper 1 (Essay) and Paper 2 (Comprehension) — and are used to track progress and identify areas for targeted coaching.
We build students' knowledge base systematically across all six GP domains — with curated current affairs examples, case studies and perspectives that can be applied flexibly across essay questions.
We teach a structured approach to Paper 2 — identifying question types, locating evidence, inferring meaning, and crafting precise answers that meet the mark scheme requirements.
We coach students to construct a clear thesis, develop well-reasoned arguments with concrete examples, and write coherent, persuasive essays within the time limit.
GP rewards precise, sophisticated language. We build students' academic vocabulary and teach them to use language purposefully to shape meaning and strengthen their arguments.
JC2 is the consolidation and examination-readiness year. Students refine their essay technique, deepen their understanding of complex issues, and develop the speed and precision needed to perform under A-Level examination conditions. The focus is on depth of argument and examination strategy.
The A-Level GP examination comprises two papers, each 1 hour 30 minutes. Paper 1 (Essay) requires students to answer one question from a choice of 12, drawing on their knowledge of local, regional and global issues. Paper 2 (Comprehension) presents a single passage with structured questions including an Application Question (AQ) and a summary task.
We conduct regular timed full-paper practices under examination conditions, followed by detailed review sessions that identify patterns in errors and sharpen examination technique.
The AQ is where many students lose marks. We teach a structured AQ framework — identifying the issue, evaluating the text's stance, and applying personal knowledge to construct a balanced, well-supported response.
Choosing the right essay question is critical. We coach students to evaluate all 12 questions quickly and select the one that best matches their knowledge base and argument strengths.
A-Level examiners reward nuanced, well-developed arguments. We push students beyond surface-level responses to develop multi-perspective, conceptually rich essays that stand out.
Whether your child is in JC1 building their foundation or JC2 preparing for the A-Levels, our GP coaches will develop the critical thinking, knowledge depth and examination technique needed to achieve their best.
