Chinese Language Coaching

从识字写字到PSLE华文卓越

Our Primary Chinese programme follows closely with the latest MOE syllabus, building confident Mandarin communicators and skilled writers from P1 through to PSLE.

Our programme follows closely with the latest MOE syllabus. All skills and learning outcomes on this page are drawn from the 2024 Primary Chinese Syllabus (小学华文课程标准 2024) published by the Curriculum Planning and Development Division, MOE Singapore.

The MOE Primary Chinese Syllabus offers three course tracks: Standard Chinese (华文), Higher Chinese (高级华文) and Foundation Chinese (基础华文, available from P5). Our coaching supports students across all three tracks. The character counts shown on this page refer to the Standard Chinese (华文) track.

Primary 1 & 2

奠基阶段第一阶段 — 识字、写字与基础听说

Primary 1 and 2 form the first stage of the Foundation Phase (奠基阶段) in the MOE Primary Chinese Syllabus. At this stage, the focus is on building strong foundations in listening, speaking, character recognition (识字) and handwriting (写字). Students develop phonological awareness through Hanyu Pinyin, learn to recognise and write fundamental Chinese characters, and begin to communicate in Mandarin with growing confidence.

The 2024 syllabus emphasises cultivating a positive attitude towards the Chinese language and a love of reading from the earliest years.

MOE Syllabus — Language Skills (语言能力)

The Chinese Language Syllabus develops five language abilities. The following skills are developed at this level group.

Listening(聆听)

700–750

Characters to Recognise

识字 (cumulative)

300–350

Characters to Write

写字 (cumulative)

P1 and P2 students sit school-based assessments covering listening, oral communication, reading comprehension, character recognition, and writing. We prepare students for all components, with particular emphasis on Hanyu Pinyin, character writing, and oral communication.

How Aspire Hub Helps at Primary 1 & 2

01

Hanyu Pinyin and Pronunciation Mastery

We build accurate Mandarin pronunciation through structured Hanyu Pinyin instruction, addressing common tonal errors early. Strong pronunciation at P1–P2 is the foundation for confident oral communication throughout primary school.

02

Character Recognition and Handwriting

We use multi-sensory techniques — visual mnemonics, stroke-by-stroke practice, and character component analysis — to help students recognise and write Chinese characters accurately and confidently. We pay close attention to stroke order and character structure.

03

Oral Communication in Mandarin

We create a supportive, low-anxiety environment where students practise speaking Mandarin in complete sentences. We use storytelling, show-and-tell, and guided conversation activities to develop fluency and confidence in oral expression.

01

Reading Aloud and Comprehension

We develop reading fluency through regular read-aloud practice with age-appropriate texts, including stories, nursery rhymes and simple informational texts. We teach students to use context clues and Hanyu Pinyin to decode unfamiliar characters.

OUR APPROACH TO CHINESE

Building a Genuine Love for the Chinese Language.

Chinese language learning is most effective when students develop a genuine connection to the language — not just as a subject to be passed, but as a rich medium of communication, culture and expression. At Aspire Hub, we cultivate this connection alongside rigorous academic preparation.

Our coaches are trained in the PSLE Chinese paper format and the 2024 MOE Primary Chinese Syllabus. We support students across all three course tracks — Standard (华文), Higher (高级华文) and Foundation (基础华文) — with coaching tailored to each student’s level and learning goals.

How Aspire Hub Helps at Primary 3 & 4

01

Reading Comprehension Strategies

We teach students a systematic approach to Chinese reading comprehension — identifying the main idea, extracting key information, making inferences, and understanding the sequence of events. We train students to annotate texts and construct well-supported written answers.

02

Paragraph Writing Development

We guide students through the process of writing structured paragraphs — from generating ideas and organising content to expressing ideas clearly in Chinese. We focus on logical flow, appropriate vocabulary, and grammatical accuracy.

03

Vocabulary Building

We help students build a rich vocabulary through wide reading, vocabulary notebooks, and contextual learning. We teach students to infer the meaning of unfamiliar characters and words from context — a critical skill for comprehension and writing.

01

Oral Presentation and Discussion

We develop students’ ability to present ideas coherently and participate in discussions in Mandarin. We use structured oral activities — presentations, debates, and collaborative tasks — to build fluency, confidence and the ability to express opinions clearly.

Primary 5 & 6

定向阶段 — PSLE华文备考与综合语言能力

Primary 5 and 6 form the Orientation Phase (定向阶段) of the MOE Primary Chinese Syllabus. At this stage, the focus shifts to comprehensive development of all language skills, with emphasis on oral interaction, reading, writing and written interaction. Students are expected to read and respond to a wider range of text types with greater sophistication, produce well-structured compositions, and communicate with fluency and precision in Mandarin.

The PSLE Chinese paper tests all language skills and requires students to demonstrate both linguistic accuracy and communicative competence.

The PSLE Chinese examination comprises Oral Communication (口试), Listening Comprehension (听力理解), Reading Comprehension (阅读理解), and Composition Writing (写作). Students may sit the examination at Standard (华文), Higher (高级华文) or Foundation (基础华文) level. We prepare students for all levels and all components.

How Aspire Hub Helps at Primary 5 & 6

01

PSLE Chinese Preparation — All Components

We prepare students for all components of the PSLE Chinese paper: Oral Communication (口试), Listening Comprehension (听力理解), Reading Comprehension (阅读理解), and Composition Writing (写作). Each component requires distinct skills, and we train students systematically for all of them.

02

Composition Writing Excellence

We help students develop a strong compositional voice in Chinese — from vivid scene-setting and character development to a satisfying resolution. We teach students to use varied sentence structures, appropriate idioms (成语), and precise vocabulary to elevate their writing.

03

Reading Comprehension and Critical Analysis

PSLE Chinese comprehension passages require students to read critically — identifying the writer’s purpose, understanding implicit meaning, and evaluating information. We train students to construct well-supported answers using precise Chinese language.

01

Oral Communication Coaching

The PSLE Chinese Oral component tests reading aloud (朗读) and picture-based conversation (看图说话/口试). We conduct regular oral practice sessions, providing structured feedback on pronunciation, fluency, expression and the ability to express opinions clearly in Mandarin.
