English Language Coaching
From Literacy Foundations to PSLE Excellence
Our Primary English programme follows closely with the latest MOE syllabus, developing confident readers, expressive writers, and articulate communicators from Pi through to PSLE.
Our programme follows closely with the latest MOE syllabus. All skills and learning outcomes on this page are drawn from the 2020 English Language Syllabus (Primary) published by the Curriculum Planning and Development Division, MOE Singapore.

The English language curriculum builds progressively from P1 to P6. Explore the MOE syllabus skills, key focus areas, and how our coaches support your child at each stage.
P1 – P2
P1 and P2 students sit school-based assessments that test listening, reading, grammar, vocabulary and writing. We prepare students for these with structured practice on spelling, grammar MCQs, reading comprehension passages, and guided writing tasks.
01
Phonics and Word Recognition
We use structured phonics instruction to build strong decoding skills, helping students read unfamiliar words independently. Our coaches identify and address individual gaps in phonological awareness early, before they compound in later years.
02
Oral Language Development
We create a supportive environment where students practise speaking in complete sentences, retelling stories, and expressing ideas clearly. Strong oral language skills at P1–P2 directly support reading comprehension and writing development.
03
Guided Reading and Comprehension
We introduce students to a range of text types — stories, simple informational texts — and teach them to identify key information, make simple inferences, and respond to what they read with confidence.
01
Spelling and Writing Foundations
We build spelling accuracy through systematic practice and teach students to construct grammatically correct sentences. We also develop their ability to generate and organise ideas for writing, laying the groundwork for composition writing in P3 and beyond.
OUR APPROACH TO ENGLISH
English is not just a subject — it is the medium through which students learn, think and communicate across every area of school life. At Aspire Hub, we develop students who are not just competent in English, but genuinely confident and expressive users of the language.
Our coaches are trained in the PSLE English paper format and the 2020 MOE English Language Syllabus. We take an integrated approach — developing reading, writing, listening, speaking, grammar and vocabulary together, as they reinforce one another in authentic language use.

P3 – P4
Primary 3 and 4 mark a significant step up in English language expectations. Students move from learning to read to reading to learn. The MOE syllabus at this stage focuses on developing close reading skills, building vocabulary, writing structured compositions, and applying grammar knowledge at the sentence level. Students are expected to read a wider range of text types and produce writing for different purposes and audiences.
P3 and P4 students sit weighted assessments covering listening comprehension, oral communication, reading comprehension, grammar and vocabulary, and composition writing. We prepare students for all components with structured practice and targeted feedback.
01
Comprehension Skills and Strategies
We teach students a systematic approach to comprehension — skimming for main ideas, scanning for specific details, making inferences and quoting precise words, phrases or sentences for vocabulary questions. We train students to annotate texts and construct well-supported answers.
02
Composition Writing Framework
We guide students to structure their compositions using a clear narrative arc — beginning, build-up, climax, and resolution. Students are taught to develop coherent and engaging storylines, while incorporating vivid descriptions, varied sentence structures, and a consistent narrative voice.
03
Grammar in Context
Rather than drilling grammar rules in isolation, we teach grammar through reading and writing. Students learn to identify grammatical patterns in texts and apply them in their own writing, building accuracy through meaningful practice.
01
Vocabulary Enrichment
We build students’ vocabulary systematically through word study, wide reading, and vocabulary notebooks. Students learn to use context clues to infer the meaning of unfamiliar words — a critical skill for comprehension and composition.

P5 – P6
Primary 5 and 6 represent the final stage of the primary English language journey, culminating in the PSLE English paper. The MOE syllabus at this stage emphasises critical reading and viewing, effective composition writing, oral communication with confidence and fluency, and precise grammar and vocabulary use.
Students are expected to read and respond to a wider range of text types, including factual articles, news reports and narratives, and to produce writing that is purposeful, well-structured and linguistically precise.
The English Language Syllabus is organised around five language learning areas. The following skills are developed at this level group.
The PSLE English examination comprises four papers: Writing (Paper 1), Language Use and Comprehension (Paper 2), Listening Comprehension (Paper 3), and Oral Communication (Paper 4). We prepare students for all four components, with particular emphasis on composition writing and comprehension, which carry the highest weightage.
01
PSLE English Paper Preparation
We prepare students for all four PSLE English components: Paper 1 (Writing), Paper 2 (Language Use and Comprehension), Paper 3 (Listening Comprehension), and Paper 4 (Oral Communication). Each component requires a distinct set of skills, and we train students for all of them.
02
Composition Writing Excellence
We help students develop a distinctive writing voice and master the craft of composition writing — from vivid scene-setting and character development to a satisfying resolution. We teach students to write with purpose, using language deliberately to create effect.
03
Comprehension and Critical Reading
PSLE comprehension passages are increasingly complex and require students to read critically, not just literally. We train students to identify the writer’s purpose and tone, interpret figurative language, and construct well-supported answers using evidence from the text.
01
Oral Communication Coaching
The PSLE Oral component — reading aloud and stimulus-based conversation — requires both linguistic accuracy and communicative confidence. We conduct regular oral practice sessions, providing structured feedback on pronunciation, fluency, expression and content.
