Lower Secondary: Building the Language Foundation for Secondary School

Lower Secondary G3 students enter secondary school having completed the Primary English Language Syllabus 2020. The Secondary EL Syllabus 2020 builds directly on this foundation, advancing students’ language learning to a more sophisticated level.

At S1–S2, the focus is on developing close and critical reading skills, strengthening oral communication, and building the writing repertoire to include a wider range of text types. Students are expected to engage with longer and more complex texts, develop their personal voice in writing, and communicate with greater precision and persuasiveness.

MOE Syllabus — Areas of Language Learning

The EL Syllabus 2020 is organised around six areas of language learning. The following skills are developed at this level group and track.
Listening & Viewing

Listening

Listening Comprehension

Oral

Planned Response & Spoken Interaction

Reading

Comprehension — Literal, Inferential, Vocabulary in context, the use of language for effect and Summary

Writing

Situational Writing & Continuous Writing

Lower Secondary Express students sit school-based assessments covering listening comprehension, oral communication, reading comprehension, and writing. We prepare students for all components, with emphasis on comprehension and writing — the skills that will carry the most weight at O-Level.

How Aspire Hub Helps — Lower Secondary English · G3 Express

01

Comprehension and Critical Reading

We teach students to read closely and critically — identifying the writer’s purpose, tone and use of language, making inferences, and evaluating information. We train students to construct well-supported answers using evidence from the text, a skill that directly prepares them for O-Level Paper 2.

02

Writing Across Text Types

We develop students’ ability to write for a variety of purposes — narrative, descriptive, expository, argumentative and situational writing. We focus on organisational structure, language features, and the development of a distinctive writing voice.

03

Oral Communication

We build students’ confidence and competence in spoken English through structured oral activities — presentations and discussions. We provide targeted feedback on pronunciation, fluency, expression and the ability to articulate ideas clearly.

01

Grammar and Vocabulary in Context

We teach grammar and vocabulary not in isolation but in the context of reading and writing. Students learn to identify grammatical patterns in texts and apply them in their own writing, building accuracy and precision through meaningful practice.

Our Approach to Secondary English

Beyond the Examination. Towards Genuine Language Mastery.

Secondary English is not just about passing the O-Level or SEC G2 examination. It is about developing the language competence, critical thinking skills, and communicative confidence that students will carry into post-secondary education and beyond. At Aspire Hub, we develop both — rigorous examination preparation alongside genuine language development.

Our coaches are trained in the EL Syllabus 2020 and the specific requirements of the O-Level and SEC G2 English papers. We work with students across both the G3 and G2 tracks, tailoring our coaching to each student’s level, learning goals, and examination pathway.

Upper Secondary: O-Level and SEC G2 Preparation — Mastery Across All Components

Upper Secondary G3 students prepare for the GCE O-Level English Language examination at the end of Secondary 4. The O-Level English paper tests all six areas of language learning at a sophisticated level. Students are expected to read and respond to narrative and non-narrative texts, produce writing that is purposeful, well-structured and linguistically precise, and communicate with fluency, confidence and persuasiveness.

At S3–S4, the emphasis shifts towards mastery — developing the full range of language skills needed to perform at the highest level in the O-Level examination.

How Aspire Hub Helps — Upper Secondary English · G3 Express

01

O-Level English Paper Preparation

We prepare students for all four O-Level English papers: Paper 1 (Writing — Situational and Continuous), Paper 2 (Comprehension), Paper 3 (Listening Comprehension), and Paper 4 (Oral Communication). Each paper requires distinct skills, and we train students systematically for all of them.

02

Comprehension — Critical and Analytical Reading

O-Level comprehension passages are complex and require students to read critically — identifying the writer’s purpose, tone and use of language, interpreting figurative language, and evaluating arguments. We train students to construct precise, well-supported answers that score marks at every level of the comprehension paper.

03

Writing Excellence — Situational and Continuous

We help students master both components of Paper 1. For situational writing, we teach students to identify the purpose, audience and context of the task and produce a well-structured, response with an appropriate tone. For continuous writing, we develop students’ ability to write effectively across different genres with a focus on narrative, personal reflective, discursive and argumentative writing.

01

Oral Communication Coaching

The O-Level Oral component tests planned response and spoken interaction. We conduct regular oral practice sessions, providing structured feedback on pronunciation, fluency, expression and the ability to engage in a substantive spoken interaction on a range of topics.

Lower Secondary: Building the Language Foundation for Secondary School

Lower Secondary G2 students follow the same EL Syllabus 2020 as G3 students, with the same six areas of language learning. The key difference lies in the pace of progression and the level of text complexity. At S1–S2 (G2), the focus is on building a strong language foundation — developing reading comprehension, strengthening written expression, and building confidence in oral communication.

Students are supported to develop the language skills they will need for the G2 English examination at the end of S4.

At S3–S4, the focus is on consolidating language skills, addressing recurring errors, and building the confidence and competence needed to perform well across all components of the G2 examination.

03

Writing — Structure, Accuracy and Voice

We help G2 students develop well-structured, accurately written responses for both situational and continuous writing. We address recurring grammatical errors, build vocabulary, and develop students’ ability to write with a clear purpose and appropriate tone.

01

Oral Communication and Confidence

We conduct regular oral practice sessions for G2 students, providing structured feedback on pronunciation, fluency and expression. We build the confidence students need to perform well in the G2 Oral component and to communicate effectively in English beyond the classroom.
